Patty Limerick is Professor of History andÌýEnvironmental Studies, Director of theÌýApplied History Initiative, and Campus Partner for Academic Affairs for Veteran and Military Affairs at theÌýUniversity of Colorado, Boulder. SheÌýis theÌýauthor of Desert Passages, TheÌýLegacy of Conquest, Something in theÌýSoilÌýand A Ditch in Time. Limerick has served as President of theÌýAmerican Studies Association, theÌýWestern History Association, theÌýOrganization of American Historians, and theÌýSociety of American Historians. Additionally, sheÌýserved as Vice President of theÌýTeaching Division of theÌýAmerican Historical Association and as a Member of theÌýNational Council on theÌýHumanities. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1995 and wasÌýelected to theÌýAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021. Limerick has dedicated her career to bridging theÌýgap between academics and theÌýpublic and to showing theÌýbenefits of applying historical perspectives to contemporary issues. ÌýShe is just beginning work on a book entitled Out of Order: ÌýHair-Raising Tales of an Academic Renegade, harvesting memories from those years of risky gap-bridging.
