Why they submitted this recipe:Our family is Cuban and Colombian. Although Julian is a 2nd generation American, he stays close to roots through music, food and traditions. Our tradition for when he comes back home from Â鶹ÊÓƵ is to prepare Picadillo. For him, it’s the taste of home. When he smells the Picadillo cooking, he knows he’s home.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 lbs ground beef or ground turkeyÌý
  • Pitted green olives (or pimento stuffed)-2 cupsÌý
  • 2 small can tomato sauceÌý
  • Minced garlic 2 clovesÌý
  • Raisins-1.5 cupÌý
  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)Ìý
  • Paprika 1/2 tspÌý
  • 1 medium white onion choppedÌý
  • Olive oil for sautéing garlic and beef/turkeyÌý
  • Optional, put in two bay leaves while it’s cooking, but be sure to remove before serving

Directions

  • Sauté the minced garlic in about 3 tablespoons of olive oil until golden.
  • Place the ground beef or turkey in the pan with the minced garlic, which is now golden. Medium heat until meat is browned and mostly cooked through. No pink.Ìý
  • In a blender place 2 cans of tomato sauce, 1 tablespoon of the olive juice from the jar, about 20 green olives, one tablespoon of olive oil and the white onion and blend.Ìý
  • The meat is brown. Add what was just blended plus 1 cup of olives and the spices -salt, pepper, paprika. About 1 teaspoon each, but can be tasted and determined if more is needed.
  • Simmer on low for 15 minutes and add one cup of raisins.Ìý
  • Simmer for about 10 more minutes and serve over white rice.Ìý
  • Taste before serving to see if any salt is needed. In total, the meat should have been cooked for about 30 minutes, but since the first step is browning the meat, it should be mostly cooked by the time you add the other ingredients.
