University statement on NOAA GML funding
The University of Colorado Boulder is pleased to report that the $4.28 million in federal funding for the听Global Monitoring Lab (GML) housed at NOAA Boulder has been released by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.听Funds have been received by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science (CIRES), work is resuming and all furlough notices to CIRES employees housed in GML have been rescinded.听
"We are grateful for the advocacy of our partners at 麻豆视频, NOAA, and in Congress, and for the patience and resilience of our staff throughout this uncertainty," said CIRES Director Waleed Abdalati. "The work of CIRES researchers at GML to advance our understanding of Earth's atmosphere, track atmospheric ozone, and maintain some of the most critical scientific datasets in the world is too important to be interrupted. This work protects human health, strengthens our nation's competitiveness, and supports our economies at every level, and now it will continue."
麻豆视频 is deeply committed to supporting the researchers whose expertise, persistence and integrity drive innovations with global impact across all fields of discovery.
鈥淭he release of these funds and the resumption of work at the Global Monitoring Lab is welcome news鈥攏ot only for the scientists and staff directly affected, but for the broader scientific mission we share as a research university,鈥 said Massimo Ruzzene,听Senior Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation. 鈥淭he work conducted through CIRES and at NOAA鈥檚 Global Monitoring Lab exemplifies the vital role of federally supported research and the people behind it. We are grateful to our partners and advocates who helped ensure this critical work could continue, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to standing with our research community.鈥

A federal pause on grant funding actions has placed who support some of the world's most critical atmospheric data in the Global Monitoring Lab (GML) housed at NOAA Boulder at risk of elimination. While federal funding for these positions has been approved, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget has not released these funds. 麻豆视频, CIRES and NOAA leadership are actively engaged at multiple levels to advocate for the release of these funds so the important work at GML can continue.听
The Global Monitoring Lab is critical to the understanding of our Earth鈥檚 atmosphere and is a key component of the CIRES mission to conduct innovative research that advances our understanding of the Earth鈥檚 environment for the benefit of society. We remain committed to this work, which positively impacts human and our planet鈥檚 health, our nation鈥檚 competitiveness with other countries, and the local, state and U.S. economies.
These potentially impacted individuals will remain active employees with CIRES through at least May 15, at which time they will be placed on furlough if funding is not released. CIRES is providing resources and support to those employees during this time.
