Course Substitutions

Please consult with your ²¹³¦²¹»å±ð³¾¾±³¦Ìý²¹»å±¹¾±²õ´Ç°ù before enrolling in a substitute course or with questions about pacing. While some substitutes are almost identical to the MCEN version, others are only appropriate for students pursuing a specific minor or option track, based on requisites.

Some of the courses listed below may be restricted to students in that department's major. If you're an ME major hoping to enroll in one of the non-MCEN courses below, you may need to submit a course request form for that department.

  • APPM 1350 Calculus 1 for Engineers: ​MATH 1300
  • APPM 1360 Calculus 2 for Engineers: ​MATH 2300
  • APPM 2350ÌýCalculus 3 for Engineers: ​MATH 2400
  • APPM 2360 Linear Algebra & Differential Equations: MATH 2130+3430
    • In addition to satisfying APPM 2360, MATH 2130+3430 will also satisfy the Math/Science Foundations requirement.
    • Following the removal of the Math/Science Foundations requirement from the curriculum starting in Spring 2026, the MATH 2130+3430 combination satisfies both APPM 2360 and 3 credits toward the General Technical Elective requirement for the ME major.
  • MCEN 1030 Intro to Engineering Computing: ASEN 1030, CSCI 1300, ECEN 1310, ASEN 1320, CSCI 1320 (last offered spring 2020)
    • CHEN 1310 + APPM 2460 is also pre-approved to satisfy MCEN 1030, for students who originally took CHEN 1310 as a BMEN/CHEN/CBEN/EVENÌýmajor. Submission of a formalÌýpetitionÌýis required. Students with approved petitions will need to fill out the for enrollment assistance into any courses where MCEN 1030 is listed as a requisite.

  • GEEN 1400 Engineering Projects:ÌýASEN 1400, ASEN 1403, COEN 1400, ECEN 1400, GEEN 2400 (sophomores or juniors), GEEN 3400 (juniors or seniors)
  • MCEN 1024 Chemistry for Energy and Materials Science:ÌýCHEM 1113, CHEN 1201, CHEN 1211, CHEM 1400
  • MCEN 1025ÌýComputer-Aided Design & Fabrication ​(for students who changed their major to ME in Spring 2026 or earlier)
    • ​BMEN 1025 is approved to satisfy MCEN 1025 only for students who originally took BMEN 1025 as a BMEN major. Submission of a formalÌýpetitionÌýis required. Students with approved petitions will need to fill out the for enrollment assistance into any courses where MCEN 1025 is listed as a requisite.
  • MCEN 1026ÌýComputer-Aided Design & MCEN 2026 Intro to Fabrication ​(for students who change their major to ME after Spring 2026)
    • ​BMEN 1020/1025 is approved to satisfy MCEN 1026 only for students who originally took BMEN 1020/1025 as a BMEN major. Submission of a formalÌýpetitionÌýis required. Completion of MCEN 2026 is still required to fully satisfy the MCEN 1026+2026 sequence. ME majors who previously took BMEN 1025 can fill out the for enrollment assistance into MCEN 2026.

  • MCEN 3047 Data Analysis and Experimental Methods:ÌýGEEN 3853
  • MCEN 4043 System Dynamics:ÌýECEN 3300/3301 + ECEN/MCEN 4138
    • Completing both ECEN 3300/3301 andÌýECEN/MCEN 4138 satisfies both the MCEN 4043 requirement plus 3 credits toward an ME or General Technical Elective. Students completing this substitution will need to fill out the for enrollment assistance into any courses where MCEN 4043 is listed as a requisite.
